Melanie DeMore

was born to parents who founded one of the first Black theatre groups in Alaska. After receiving a music degree from Incarnate Word University in San Antonio, Texas, she diversified her career as a studio musician, commercial jingle vocalist, stage actor, singer/songwriter and choral conductor. In 1988, after 8 years of teaching, performing and serving as Musical Director for the arts council in Taos, New Mexico, DeMore moved to Oakland, where she's been a California Artist In Residence and on the conducting staff of the Oakland Youth Chorus. She is on the faculty of St. Paul's School, where she conducts the a cappela choir. DeMore leads vocal and 'Sound Awareness' workshops in the US, Canada and New Zealand and is listed in Speakout! a national directory of progressive performers and speakers. DeMore has a number of recordings to her credit, including 2 solo recordings the most recent being, 'Share My Song'. She has performed extensively throughout the US as well as Canada and Cuba and has had the pleasure of sharing the stage with Pete Seeger, Laura Nyro, Sweet Honey in the Rock and Ani Difranco. Her voice can be heard in many places, but one of her favorites, is the singing voice of the mother bat in " Stellaluna", produced by Living Books, an interactive cd rom children book company.
